Poor mental health is frequently a contributing factor to a person becoming homeless, and then once they are sleeping rough, someone suffering from poor mental health is 50% more likely to spend more than a year on the streets than someone who isn’t.
Soup Kitchen London, near Goodge Street in Fitzrovia, offers a mental health drop-in clinic, where people coming to their day centre for food and other services can access immediate mental health support on site. Guests can access immediate one-to-one therapy and support from qualified professionals in a confidential environment, so that they can address whatever is going on for them.
This can help them tackle issues that may have made them homeless in the first place, or to seek support around poor mental health that they may be experiencing as a result of sleeping rough. The mental health centre provides one-to-one counselling, primarily through trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to address PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance addiction, schizophrenia and other trauma.
The right specialist help at the right time can make a huge difference for someone. It provides crucial early intervention and sustained psychological support, and significantly improves guests' emotional resilience, self-confidence and their ability to cope effectively with the challenges they are facing.
