Psychotherapy support on the streets, reaching entrenched rough sleepers where they are

Grant £25,000

Research shows a strong link between childhood trauma and homelessness: around 90% of people sleeping rough have faced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), and half have endured four or more. These experiences often lead to conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD, and a higher risk of becoming homeless as adults.

An innovative psychotherapy outreach service run by Providence Row tackles this by bringing trained therapists directly to people sleeping rough. Instead of relying on set appointments, therapists meet clients where they are - on the street, in hostels, or other chosen spaces - at times that suit them.

This flexible model builds trust and creates safe opportunities for people to address deep-rooted trauma, helping people to explore things that may have led to them becoming homeless.

The approach requires patience and adaptability, but over time this support helps clients open up, engage with addiction treatment, reconnect with loved ones, and often secure housing - even after decades on the streets. The impact can be life-changing, helping people take the first real steps towards re-building their lives.
